A Name is a Name Wins Awards in Chicago United Nations Association of Chicago Screens Film

November 2, 2011 (Skopje, Macedonia) – The documentary film about Macedonia and the Macedonian people – A Name is a Name – has been awarded well-deserved recognition after being screened in Chicago as part of the Global Wake Up Film Festival hosted by the United Nations Association-USA Greater Chicago Chapter.
The film was screened on Saturday, October 29 at Columbia College in Chicago.

Over 140 films were submitted to the festival and 41were chosen for screening. A Name is A Name won the “Audience Choice Award” and was also awarded as an “Official Selection.” The official announcement from the Film Submissions/Selection Team noted “We enjoyed screening every single film, and it was truly an honor. Your productions reached audiences who may never have been aware of the issues and struggles people from all over the world face and helped promote awareness of the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations.”

“This is truly an honor and acknowledgment of Macedonia and the Macedonian people and their struggle to have their name and identity recognized,” stated the film’s director, Icelander Sigurjon Einarsson. “To have the United Nations Association of Chicago screen the film and bestow this award is recognition of that struggle and I am very happy to have helped to put a spotlight on Macedonia through this documentary. Credit goes to our talented production team from Macedonia, our narrator, Sir Andrew Motion of the UK, and our brilliant musicians who lent their name and songs to the film including Morten Harket, Earth Affair, Sigur Rós, Múm, Kiril Dzjakovski, Graham Nash, Tose Proeski and Monte Negro,” Einarsson continued.

To date the film has been shown in Australia, Europe, Canada and the United States in 23 cities educating, entertaining and encouraging audiences. Copies of the film continue to be given to elected officials, policy makers and decision makers in capital cities around the world in order to educate them so that they might better understand Macedonia and the Macedonian people.

About With Macedonia
Making a difference, with Macedonia

Although our members come from different countries and backgrounds, we maintain one common belief: that culture matters.

Culture can be a uniting force, a force for individual betterment, and a force for social transformation. Internationally-recognized cultural figures, therefore, can have a major and positive impact on issues ranging from poverty and public health to inequality and social injustice.

By working with world cultural figures, and winning their support, the With Macedonia Foundation is also supporting the prospect of a better future for all those living in the Republic of Macedonia. This small and often overlooked Balkan nation is beset with many serious challenges, some common to other countries in transition others, completely unique.

The cultural figures with whom the With Macedonia Foundation engages include visual artists and musicians, actors and other performing artists, sportsmen, scholars, and other cultural emissaries who have influence in areas relevant to Macedonia, from food and wine to faith and tourism.

By working with such figures, our foundation gives them the opportunity to express their support for Macedonia in a variety of ways. Whether it is standing with Macedonia by bringing attention to its cultural and touristic offerings, or standing with Macedonia in support of freedom and human rights, these figures can have a powerful effect on bringing the issues that matter before a global audience. Their words and actions will therefore have direct benefit for the future of Macedonia as a prosperous, free and democratic nation.

A place at the table for Macedonia
By Jason Miko - The Washington Times, September 3, 2010

Sept. 8 is the Republic of Macedonia's 19th birthday. Since 1991, Macedonia has worked its way through the painful transition from a socialist state born out of Yugoslavia to the point where it is today - a contributing member of the family of nations, an exporter of stability and a reliable ally of the United States and NATO.

Unfortunately, Macedonia has not been granted its seat at the table and instead has been, in many ways, relegated to the "deal with later" box of the administration's issues.

New York Times - Shame On Greece: Messing With Macedonia
April 3, 2008

The Macedonians walked out of the NATO summit on Thursday and we can’t say we blame them.

Croatia and Albania were granted membership in the western alliance at a leaders’ meeting in Bucharest, but Macedonia was barred for an absurd reason: Greece doesn’t like its name.
